In 2012, for the first time, La Fausto Coppi Selle San Marco abolished the starting grids in favour of charity fund raising. Thanks to the contribution of many passionate riders the LILT (Italian League for the Fight Against Cancer) received a car to drive cancer patients to their treatment centers.

Italian childrens charity Bimbingamba will benefit from money raised by riders.

This year there will again be no gridding based on a riders abilities or palmares; instead there will be 150 places available ahead of the main peloton. Riders can gain entry to this group by making a €100 donation. The money raised will be used to buy one or more hand bikes for the Bimbingamba project, set up by former F1 pilot and Paralympic gold medal Alessandro Zanardi and Sergio Campo. This fantastic project helps children with amputated legs to ride a bike.

The start

The flags of the 25 countries mark the official jersey of the race that all riders must wear on the day of the event. This same shirt – the mark of belonging to an elite group of riders – is proudly worn by the riders throughout the cycling season. So far more than thirty thousand copies have been produced, and its hoped that it will help connect groups of enthusiasts who meet in the hills and valleys.

Starting from July 6th, the cycling world will meet in Piazza Galimberti in Cuneo where the organisation and sponsors are planning events, games, conferences and exhibitions. The most prestigious cycling companies will show their products in the expo area. The start and finish will also take place in Piazza Galimberti, as well as the awards ceremony.

The event is attended annually by an enthusiastic crowd that gathers along the way, especially on the mountain passes, the crucial points of the race, and the last few kilometers to the finish. As a matter of fact, this very important international event, takes place in one of the most fascinating and beautiful Italian regions: Piedmont and the Cuneo province.
