International CycloCross Preview – January 5
Our International CycloCross Preview for January 5 sees the UCI World Cup travel to the warmer climes of Rome for round 6 (well it was warm last time). In the USA there is the Kingsport Cup and in the UK, National Trophy action.

UCI World Cup 6- Rome, January 5
In 2012/13 competitors moved away from the rain and cold of northern Europe to the better weather of Italy. This created close action and longs streams of riders. Kevin Pauwels, Niels Albert and Klaas Vantornout had a good advantage over the rest with a few laps to go. Whilst home hero Marco Fontana and French rider Francis Mourey were never too far off the leaders and when Vantornout ran into trouble on the last lap, they were on hand to benefit.
In the women’s race Katie Compton did much of the early running as she and Marianne Vos went clear. With four laps undertaken Vos attacked and built a winning lead. In the final laps Sanne van Paassen drew closer to 3rd placed Katerina Nash who did enough maintain her podium spot. Katie Compton ‘s 2nd place gave her the 2012/13 UCI World Cup title.
Laars Van Der Haar has won three of the five rounds held so far in the 2013/14 season with wins also going to Francis Mourey and Niels Albert. Will resurgent Sven Nys or Albert lead the Belgians back onto the podium? Kevin Pauwels and Klaas Vantornout have both been sidelined by illness over the Festive Cross Season but after a spell in Spain they maybe up for a fight.
In the women’s race Katie Compton has taken the battle to World Champion Marianne Vos for the win. Rome could see either take the win but we should not dismiss Nikki Harris, Helen Wyman or Sanne Cant. Italian star Eva Lechner could be a candidate for a podium spot and give the locals something to cheer about.
