The team behind the Granfondo Milan–San Remo Cicloturistica is working hard to get everything ready for the 45th iteration of the annual event. This year the race will take place six weeks earlier than usual on April 26 – just a few days before the start of Expo Milano 2015.

As far as Italian cycling races go, the Granfondo Milan – San Remo has a unique international flavor because each year it has the highest percentage of foreign participants. About 1,000 participants come from all over Europe, as well as the United States, Canada, Brazil, Australia and New Zealand, to compete in the race every year.

As usual, the event will begin in the outskirts of Milan in the municipality of Assago, where competitors will set off at 7 a.m. along the official route of the Milan – Sanremo. The Granfondo Milan–San Remo encompasses the entire journey from Milan to San Remo, across the plains of Lombardy and Piedmont, up the Turchino and along the Ligurian Riviera all the way to the finish line in San Remo, after facing the legendary ascents of the Cipressa and the Poggio di Sanremo.

The race’s 300 km (186 mi.) route makes the Milan – San Remo the longest professional and amateur cycling race in the world. Begun in 1970 thanks to an initiative by the Unione Ciclistica Sanremo 1969, it is also the oldest amateur cycling race in Italy.

The popularity of the Granfondo Milan – San Remo led UC Sanremo to double its efforts. In 2014 the organization launched the Granfondo San Remo–San Remo “la Classicissima,” a new race that takes place on the same day as the Milan Sanremo “Spring Classic.”

The Granfondo San Remo–San Remo “la Classicissima,” which takes place on March 22,offers competitors the opportunity to compete on the roads of the Riviera and to cross the finish line in Via Roma two hours before the professionals.

As it has in previous years, tour operator Nyala Wonder Travel, official partner of UC Sanremo, has made the best arrangements possible with affiliated hotels in Milan and San Remo to offer rates reserved specially for race participants, as well as complete tour packages for those who wish to extend their stay on the Riviera.

About UC San Remo
The Union Cicloturistica San Remo was founded in 1970 by a passionate group of San Remo cyclists who decided to make the magic of the Spring Classic available to everyone who loves cycling. UC San Remo’s enthusiasm for cycling led to the Milan-San Remo Cyclosportive – Amateur Cycling Race, which was the first race of its kind organized in Italy. Today the UC San Remo is chaired by Simone Speciale, and the organization’s members take part in many amateur cycling events in Italy and abroad.
