THE ‘NOT A RACE, NOT A SPORTIVE, NOT AN EVENT’ RETURNS FOR 2013

With a nod and a wink to the Three Peaks Cyclocross challenge, the 2013 White Chalk Hills UCX (ULTRACROSS) returns on the 28th December, 2013.

The UCI debate the origins of Cyclocross on their YouTube channel, stating “The origins of cyclo-cross are a matter of much debate. One theory we like is that in the early 1900s, French cyclists would race each other from one town to the next by whichever route they thought would be the fastest”. The White Chalk Hills UCX takes that concept and lays out a long distance point to point challenge over 45 miles and approximately 5000 feet of climbing across the South Downs in East Sussex.

What’s involved:

The same ‘NOT a Race, NOT a Sportive, NOT an Event’ premise remains and the details are as follows:

LocationThe Tri Store 49 Grove Road, Eastbourne BN21 4TX

Date: 28 December 2013

Time: 08:30 There will be a quick briefing at 08:15

All the same caveats apply as last year: White Chalk Hills UCX 2012 – You are supplied with a control card, and the control stamps are located along the route. The after party, as always, is at Eastbourne’s finest Belgian Café on Terminus Road.

The route has changed a little from last year (only slightly) – gone are the optional Bostal climbs. There are no options this time around. Although the premise is as stated there is a reward for those who get into the spirit of the ride – there is a case of beer supplied by the The Long Man Brewery for the first individual back to the Belgian Café who has a full stamp card.

There will also be some spot prizes from Velobici.cc for the best interpretation of VAINGLORIOUS or FUTILE.

This year the organisers introduced a post card entry process for 2013, detailed here. Entry has now closed, but anyone is welcome to join the ride, though at this late stage you won’t be offered a stamp card or qualify for the beer. If you have a lose end and feel the need to burn off those added calories put on over the Christmas period, meet everyone outside the shop as stated.

If you’d like to come along please write to mark@velomorpha.cc and a GPX file of the route will be provided.
