2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Scotland

The 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships will bring together thirteen different disciplines for the first time.

Running from the 3rd to the 13th of August, the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships will be a true celebration of competitive cycling. Rather than the usual scattered approach – with each discipline having its own championship in its own unique location – 2023 will be the first all-together event.

Scotland will be showing off its pretty side for the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships

And when I say all together, I mean all. The thirteen events included at the World Championships are (deep breath) BMX freestyle flatland, BMX freestyle park, BMX racing, Gran Fondo, Indoor Cycling, MTB cross-country, MTB cross-country marathon, MTB downhill, Para-cycling road, Para-cycling track, Road, Track and Trials! And each of those disciplines will be further broken down into genders, classes and type of event.

Locations

Most events will be taking place in and around Edinburgh and Glasgow. Some like the Gran Fondo championships will be held around Perth, just north of Edinburgh. Meanwhile the MTB cross-country events will be held to the south in Glentress, while the downhillers head to Fort William to the north.

Routes for the 2023 UCI World Championships road events

The world’s best cyclists will savour some of Scotland’s spectacular scenery. The men’s and women’s road races will pass Edinburgh Castle and Arthur’s Seat in the capital. Then moving on to the Wallace Monument, the Kelpies and the banks of Loch Lomond en-route to the finish line at Glasgow’s George Square.

While you’ll need to be world class to participate at the World Championships – with the exception of the Gran Fondo – there are volunteering opportunities. Head over to the website for volunteering opportunities. And while not an exact copy of the route, Zwift’s map for the 2023 UCI cycling Esports world championships, will draw inspiration from Scotland. The Esports world championships take place in February and will feature a three-round knockout format,

I’ll leave the last word to UCI President David Lappartient, who said: “With less than a year to go until the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships, it is fantastic to be able to visualise the road race courses. The spectacular and challenging routes will guarantee the show that the organisers had promised us. The athletes now have a clear vision of what awaits them in the battle for the rainbow jersey next year.
