Who will win the Tour de France?

May 2013

Who will win the 2013 Tour de France? Saxo Capital Markets, the UK City arm of Saxo Bank, under the @saxomarkets Twitter moniker and #saxocycling, are confident. They predict it will be a straight battle between two of the best riders from the current generation of pros – Chris Froome and Alberto Contador.

They are certainly two of the best climbers with a similar punchy style in the mountains that time trial specialists, such as Wiggins, cannot match. That isn’t to say that we do not see the time trials as important, but both Froome and Contador are great time trialists as well. However, we know that they can both put minutes into their rivals in the mountains and think that’s where this Tour will be won and lost.

Despite this you might still think the Tour much more open than Saxo Bank are predicting this year, especially given that SKY can’t even decide who is their number one rider for July. One minute it looks as though its definitely Chris Froome, as Wiggins seems to be on target for a decent performance at the Giro. The next thing you know, Wiggins quits the Giro with illness and we have to assume starts thinking about the Tour…

Plus then another strong and punchy climber, SKY’s Rigoberto Uran, released from working for Wiggins, finishes as runner-up in the Giro, and now the Tour looks like it could turn into a big SKY internal battle. We have to hope that SKY keep it together as a team and whoever is the leader gets the full support of the rest of the team. What a great problem to have though eh?

Add in another disgruntled Giro drop-put in the form of Ryder Hesjedal, the ever strong podium finisher, Cadel Evans, and Giro winner, Vincenzo Nibali, who if he can hold it is in imperious form, and the Tour starts to look wide open…

However, we agree with Saxo Cycling and are unanimous here in thinking that it will be Chris Froome and Alberto Contador battling it out in the mountains; it should make for a spectacular show. To this end @saxomarkets have produced an interesting infographic that gives you a head-to-head run down on these two riders.

If you are on Twitter yourself, you can share it, making sure you use #saxocycling, and possibly win one of three Saxo-Tinkoff jerseys signed by Alberto Contador himself.
