Day 8 Cycling the Alps on Les Routes Des Grandes Alpes from Geneva to Nice

Day 8, the final day of our trip, takes us from Saint Martin Vesubie to the finish and some much needed recovery time on the beach in Nice

From Saint Martin it is a more or less straight 50km descent into Nice. We chose to deviate slightly in order to stay off the main road, and to get one last little view of a sheer 300m drop, just next to us to remember before we arrived in Nice.

Officially the route takes in Col De Turini and Col De Castillon before finishing in Menton, but we had to be on the plane at 3.30pm and the thought of a swim in Nice meant we headed straight there.

We had arranged beforehand to collect cardboard box’s from a local bike shop, and rode with them under our arm along the Promenade Des Anglais.

I’d like to say we fitted right into the glamorous setting, but that would be a lie. I put down my cardboard box, layed out my Micro towel and went for a swim in my bib shorts. My cyclist tan merely added to the indignity.

Never mind, the sun was shining, we were in one piece (and so were our bikes) and we had just completed a truly memorable journey.
