Bedford 3 Day

Wyndymilla’s Bedford 3 Day

Stage 1 was a circuit near Great Barford of 55kms. Warming up with the girls there was some blue sky for once, though there were also some threatening dark clouds on the horizon, and typically, just as the riders lined up for the start, the heavens opened.

The heavy downpour made the riding conditions treacherous. There was little surprise that the first lap saw a crash near the front of the bunch.

Bedford 3 Day was a wet race

Monica, told me after the race, “There was a massive pile up, with riders coming down on a pot holed corner. There was a pile of tangled riders, some with bloodied elbows and road rash. The crash held up our strongest rider Emily, who was OK, she remounted the bike and we helped her back up to the main bunch.”

The bunch was now split in two, with many riders chasing hard with the help of their teams to bridge back up to the lead group. The photo above shows Monica and Emma Grant, a Dave Rayner funded rider on the Matrix Fitness team, chasing hard after the crash.

Most of the Wyndymilla team, having chased hard to get their team leader, Emily Bagnall, into the lead group, now dropped back to the second group. Wyndymilla’s Rachel was in the lead group, until an issue with an obstructive oncoming car resulted in her losing ground.

In the final there was a bunch sprint for the win with Helen McKay (Scott Contessa Epic), narrowly beating Hannah McKay (Matrix Fitness Racing Academy). Emily paid for her earlier efforts and lost 40 seconds to the leaders.
