Tour De France Fan Park

June 2013

A dramatic start to the Tour de France in Corsica and the promise of a dramatic finish in Paris which you can enjoy in the London Tour de France Fan Park.

So the first stage of the 100th Tour de France didn’t really turn into the battle of the big sprinters that we were expecting but it was certainly entertaining, if not for all the right reasons. It was disappointing, but perhaps just, that of the super sprinters – Cavendish, Greipel, Goss, et al – all were left stranded in what was a messy finish.

Of the real big sprinters only Kittel and Kristoff made it to the finish, taking first and second. Danny Van Poppel finished 3rd marking the return of a really big cycling family name onto the Tour podium. You can tell how messy a flat stage, sprint finish it was when David Millar got 4th! Well done David, even if he was too enamoured with it on his Twitter feed: “Yeah, 4th in the bunch sprint, whateves.” He has been at it a while now…

If you are anything like us then you will have been impressed by Corsica itself. Certainly we have added Corsica to our ‘possible future cycling holiday destinations’ list. It’s an island we only ever really associate with rallying not cycling, but looks to have a lot to offer.

Geographically the first stage was interesting and showed us some of what the island has to offer, but the next two stages should really highlight the best that Corsica has with tough, hilly stages that will show us more of the rugged interior.

If you fancy watching the last week of the Tour de France somewhere a bit different then how about in a ‘fan park’? The Tour de France Fan Park is located at Wood Wharf, Canary Wharf in London, and will be running from Monday 15th July until Sunday 21st July with a giant screen covering the final stage on the Champs Elysees and its historic nocturne finish.

As well as the big screen on which to watch all of the action, there will also be a ‘Tour de France Exposition’, a historical walkthrough of the Tour de France archives, which the organisers describe as ‘an educational exhibition showcasing the greatest race on earth’.
