Point2Point

Paul’s four friends, Welshmen Scott Jenkins, Rhys Jenkins, Lewis Earls and Ross Stephenson, are to embark on this audacious charity endeavor, aptly named the ‘Point2Point: Cycling the Divide’. It will mean that each of the four men cycle 112 miles a day – doing 6 hours in the saddle each day at average speeds of 18mph – and tackling some 14,000ft inclines along the way. For any of us who have ridden in week long stage races, you know that this is going to be tough and what makes this story more fascinating is the fact that each of these individuals are not true road cyclists prior to their training for this; their desire to do something more is what motivates them and gets them up in the morning. This ride is certainly going to be ‘more’…

A challenge like this is not only physical but also mental and most of them are more than used to tests of human endurance. The risk in this challenge lies not only in the possibility of physically pushing too hard and suffering from over exertion or injury, but also in the loss of concentration brought on by mental exhaustion and sleep deprivation, which would leave the team vulnerable to external factors such as traffic, adverse weather conditions and demanding terrain. On top of that, cycling through the night in the United States posses many risks such as wildlife, infrastructure and transport.

Starting on July 1st 2013, they will leave Discovery Park in Seattle at 9am and if all goes to plan arrive at Key West, Florida on July 8th 2013, finishing at the US Air Force Station. In total, the men have raised over £16,000 between them for various charities including Young Texans against Cancer, MacMillan Cancer Support, British Heart Foundation, Noah’s Ark Appeal and Help for Heroes. This challenge is designed to raise money for The British Legion and the Royal Marines Association charities.

They are fit: Lewis is a serving marine, returning from Afghanistan and taking on the challenge during his time off, and Rhys and Scott Jenkins are both keen ultra endurance athletes having run 35 miles a day for 75 days in 2010 (Boston to Austin) and the perimeter of Wales relay (750 miles in 5 days). The latter pairing have some cycling experience as last year they completed an epic 1,000 mile cycle in just 10 days over 4 of the steepest Tour de France climbs, in a challenge they called the 1000TT.

Ross (R) and Scott

Scott Jenkins is an experienced endurance athlete and cyclist, whilst Ross Stephenson(R) hasn’t ridden a bike since childhood!
